Psychiatric examination
You will most often be referred for a psychiatric examination by a doctor of another specialty or another expert. If you have such a recommendation, please bring it with you to the first examination.
A mental health examination may also be required in some specific cases: a decision on the possession or return of a driver's or firearms license, sometimes it is directly ordered by the court.
You also have the option of booking a psychiatric examination at your own request.
The aim of the examination is to detect a possible mental disorder and subsequently determine an individualized treatment plan.
You can come to the examination alone or accompanied by a loved one. You can discuss the presence of a loved one during the examination with your doctor.
What should you bring with you?
Reports and recommendations from previous medical examinations (e.g. from a neurologist, cardiologist, etc.)
Results of a psychological examination (if you have had one in the past)
Furthermore, for example, a summary report from your psychotherapist (if available).
Examination procedure:
The examination takes the form of a structured interview and, including the psychiatrist's notes, usually lasts 40 to 60 minutes.
The doctor will map out your difficulties and reasons for visiting the clinic and ask about your history (anamnesis).
In some cases, a psychiatric examination may also include completing short questionnaires, performing simple tasks (e.g. memorizing certain words, etc.).
To clarify the diagnosis, the doctor may sometimes request additional examinations, such as a clinical-psychological examination, blood tests, imaging examinations (brain CT, magnetic resonance), etc.
The conclusion of the examination is the doctor's recommendation. This may involve changing lifestyle, attending psychotherapy, starting medication, indicating other therapeutic methods, or recommending additional examinations.
The doctor may also recommend hospitalization in a hospital to ensure immediate treatment. This can only be done without your consent if you are an immediate threat to yourself or those around you (aggressiveness, suicidality).
If necessary, an appointment for another check-up is made to assess your health condition, the effect of the prescribed medication, or to adjust the treatment plan.
